7 Big Lies

By Glenn R. Horton Founder of Artists Helping Artists (AHA!) and Publisher of The Creative Line Magazine NOTE: THE FOLLOWING MISCONCEPTIONS AND LIES ARE DANGEROUS TO THE HEALTH AND WELL-BEING OF ARTISTS AND SOCIETY. 1) An artist’s success and happiness is measured only by a meteoric rise to celebrity status and money, and never by smaller victories or daily achievements. 2) Artists should never be involved in the arts of organization or finance, but devote 100% of their time being “immersed in the Muse”. 3) Artists do best as loners fully withdrawn from others. 4) Drugs and overindulgent lifestyles increase an artist’s self-worth, creativity and potential for great works. 5) Artists are strange individuals who cannot easily form social relationships. 6) Artists should not promote or sell their work, but allow it to “be discovered”. 7) Everyday people like students, housewives and businessmen should never consider they are artists or their activities creative. © Copyright 2001.
