Introduction
to Changing the World
through Art & Song
This
is a unique book. It is about change. Changing the way we think, the way we
listen to songs and the way we express songs and art.
This
book is not an attempt to be scholarly about the subjects of thinking, art,
songs, songwriting or music. The author, though a songwriter and recording
artist, has written the book more as a song lover and song observer.
Though
Changing the World Through Art and Songs makes various general
observations about songs and songwriters, their messages, their missions, etc.,
it is not about songwriting methods, tools or specific techniques. It is also
not a scientific dissertation on how music affects our cells, our digestion, our
nerve centers or our left, right or other brains.
Changing
the World Through Art and Songs provides an interesting and concise
discussion of the general nature of songs and their unique power to profoundly
touch people as well as influence the broader society. The book helps us
discover why we love our musical tunes - - ballads, stories and socially
important songs - and some of the interesting ways we are drawn to them with
such interest and passion.
These
words are written for artists, songwriters and song lovers, anyone who is
curious about songs and appreciates well-crafted tunes and lyrical visions that
move one. It is especially for those who feel strongly that songs and art have a
special power to heal, to inspire, to inform and enlighten, and profoundly
affect the mind and human spirit.
The
book is not for music critics, nay sayers or others who don't believe
songs hold any higher importance than selling records, cola or jeans. The book
is also not for those who feel songs should never rise above romantic love or
heartbreak, or for those who must withdraw from songs or works of art that would
attempt to tackle important subjects relating to the greater human predicament,
thought processes, social awareness, human civilization or, god forbid, spirits
and the divine.
This
book is for those who sense that aesthetics and message can change the way
people feel and act. And that words and music can be more - they can express the
highest aspirations of man and not only change him, but they can change the
world in which we live.
If
this book helps rekindle the vision of more articulate songs, higher quality
messages, and a more aesthetic mind - a more creative and productive one -- in
just one song lover, one songwriter or one artist, then it will have done its
job. For that one seed of creativity and song vision eventually blossoms and
releases more seeds.
Enjoy
the book! And welcome to a fascinating arts discussion and activity that is
creating a new revolution in song craft, creative message and society itself.
