Join the Human Race!

By Glenn Horton

IF YOU EVER WONDER WHY YOUR ARTISTIC ACTIVITIES OR YOUR LIFE AREN'T GETTING ANYWHERE, PRINT THE FOLLOWING OFF AND POST IT ON YOUR REFRIGERATOR DOOR -- AT LEAST YOU WILL HAVE, DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF YOU, THE REASON WHY YOUR REFRIGERATOR MIGHT BE EMPTY OR YOU ARE FAILING, NOT ONLY IN ART BUT IN LIFE. YOU DIDN'T DO THESE 7 THINGS!

I) Join the human race. Go out and make friends. Help and be helped.

II) Make your way to groups of like minded individuals and artists who share similar purposes or are in or near your field of aesthetics.

III) Find out more exactly what your own passion and purpose with life and art is. Begin to follow YOUR purpose. And STOP listening to people who wish you would play it safe, not dream too big, and be like everybody else.

IV) Keep your day job if you have to. But set aside specific times to forward your creative thought and creative impulses. And don't forget to tell people what you are doing or want to do in the arts.

V) Care more about other people. Find out about other people's interests in the arts. When you get a close match, connect up in whatever way you can and assist each other in any way possible

VI) Stop reading the A section of big newspapers and listening to the horror stories propagated on the evening or nightly news about how bad the world is. Of course the world needs help! But, come on, show some guts, get out of your house or studio more often -- go out and work and play with those who want to make something better of life. Go out and find those who have some real purpose in life. Go out and build something better! You'd be surprised how many people might help you.

VII) If you can't find creative people you can appreciate, love or befriend, or get excited about -- Re-examine your life and get a new one. (Don't resort to world wrestling, vodka, drugs, Jerry Springer or some other lost cause.) Find someone who has their own life together and ask them how THEY did it.  And then go back to step #1 and come forward again.
